Reefer and Flatbed Demand Especially Strong
Apr 29 – May 5 – May got off to a strong start, with rates rising for all three trailer types. Spring produce is kicking into high gear and reefer load posts were up nearly 10%. Compared to the month of April, the national average van rate increased 2¢ per mile, the average reefer rate gained 5¢, and the flatbed rate jumped 7¢. Flatbed capacity remains extremely tight, as the flatbed load-to-truck ratio returned to its record-high of 111 loads per truck.
