June Poised for Record Rates

Roadcheck Adds Pressure on Already Tight Capacity

Jun 3 – 9 – Spot market demand has exploded in June. Capacity was already tight from Memorial Day week, so the effect from last week’s Roadcheck inspection blitz was even more pronounced this year. The national average van rate jumped 10¢ per mile, and is now just below its January peak. The average reefer rate surged 14¢, and the national flatbed rate hit another record high, increasing 6¢ to $2.81 per mile.

National Van Rate Unchanged for 4 Weeks

Reefer and Flatbed Rate Also in Holding Pattern

Mar 11 – 17 – National average rates are in a holding pattern for now. The national average van rate held steady at $2.14 per mile for the fourth week in a row. Average reefer and flatbed rates also were unchanged. Don’t expect that to last long though. Just ahead is the end of third quarter, the pre-Easter rush, and the penalty phase of the ELD mandate.

New Year Brings Record-High Rates

Load-to-Truck Ratios Hit Record Highs

Dec 31 – Jan 6 – The combination of extreme weather, plus tightened capacity as a result of the recently implemented ELD mandate, drove rates higher during the first week of 2018. The national average van ratereefer rate and flatbed rate all moved higher last week. The demand for trucks pushed load-to-truck ratios to record highs, including an all-time record-high of 14.7 loads per truck for vans.

Post-Hurricane Van Rates Increase 12¢

Harvey Disrupts Supply Chains, Causing Capacity Shortfalls

Aug 27 – Sep 2 – In the first full week since Hurricane Harvey, truckers rushed to help with emergency relief, supply chains faced massive disruption, and ripple effects led to capacity shortfalls in multiple freight markets throughout the country. Van rates soared an average of 12¢ per mile nationwide as a result, while reefer rates rose 3¢ and flatbeds added 2¢. Also on the rise are diesel prices, which increased an average of 15¢ per gallon nationally, due to closure of many Houston-area refineries.
